What We Teach:
252 Basics is more than a curriculum, it's part of the Orange strategy. Because of this, our scope and sequence looks different than other curriculums. Curriculums provide information, but a strategy engages kids in applying and experiencing what they learn. We don't want to encourage kids to come to church to take in information, but for them to apply truths so they can go out and be the church.

The Master Plan
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind," This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: "Love your neighbor as yourself" Matthew 22: 37-39.
We believe in this verse so much that we have connected every set of age-group materials and resource to three key relationships: Wonder, Discovery, Passion.

Each of the relationships that Jesus highlighted has a different level of relevance to the stages of a child's development. Imagine the concepts of Wonder, Discovery, Passion as three dials.

Wonder is the most natural dial to turn during the formative years. We spin our content around truths that teach young children about God as a loving Father and Creator.

During the elementary years, we add the Discovery dial and turn up our content to help them see how His truths should be the compass for the decision making. We also begin turning in the passion dial, encouraging older elementary-aged kids to serve and challenging them to make others a priority.

When kids move into the teenage years, we turn up the Passion dial. It's critical for teenagers to personalize what they learn, but they need consistent opportunities to impact and influence others so they learn how to be the church and become significant by doing something significant.

Content is arranged and focused around these core concepts:

Preschool-birth through pre-K
We want kids to leave preschool being amazed with the wonder of their Heavenly Father and how much He loves them. We want them to know that God is big enough to handle whatever they will face and learn to trust a loving, powerful Father.
God made me
God loves me
Jesus wants to be my friend forever.

ELEMENTARY-Kindergarten through fifth grade
By the time elementary kids move on to middle school, we want them to have been provoked to pursue a lifestyle of discovery, where their identity is determined by a personal relationship with Christ and the work the Spirit does in them so they can reflect God's character and impact the world around them.

Presenting God's plan of Salvation
Our hope would be that every child would embrace a personal relationship with Jesus Christ by the time they the leave elementary environment. John 3:16 is used to present God's rescue plan. Each month, John 3:16 is included lightly and naturally so that kids know that God is pursuing a relationship with them through Jesus Christ. God's plan of Salvation is presented in more detail during certain month's, but we want the plan of Salvation to be presented in a special environment where parents and kids can attend together ending with parents leading their own children to a decision to follow Christ. That environment can be planned as often as desired throughout the year. ("For Heaven's Sake" is an additional resource for this environment and can be found at www.therethinkstore.org)

Virtue Based
252 Basics is built around three Basic Truths every child should embrace according to what Jesus modeled in Luke 2:52.

  • I need to make the wise choice.
  • I can trust God no matter what.
  • I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

The curriculum includes 150 Bible stories and is based on a Core Virtue and Memory Verse as the framework for each month.

One virtue is presented for an entire month with weekly bottom lines that illustrate different Biblical illustrations. Each lesson includes an engaging presentation of basic truths as well as an illustration of how God built His character in people. Worship is always included so kids experience and learn how to celebrate who God is and what He's done for them. Small Group activities include a variety of games and experiences meant to promote discussion and life application of the lesson, development of faith skills, and most importantly build relationships among the leader and friends in the group.

Please see "SAMPLES" on the homepage to find this year's list of virtues, quarterly overviews, and sample lessons.

Students-sixth grade through twelfth grade
This is the last chance for us to ensure kids have what they need before they face the pressure of life outside our homes and ministries. We want for students to experience what it means to be the church and be fueled towards a life of passion. We want them to learn to process life with God in a way that helps them become self-feeders, and engage in serving and influencing others for Christ.

  • I am created to pursue an authentic relationship with God.
  • I belong to Jesus Christ and define who I am by what He says
  • I exist every day to demonstrate God's love to a broken world.

I just wanted to let you know that we are thrilled with your curriculum. We have always thought of Children's Ministry as a service that is provided for church members--sort of glorified baby-sitting. But now we are using it as a way to reach out in the community and bring new kids in. We have seen our numbers increase already and a fresh infusion of God's spirit in our workers!
